MORAVIA

Securing their first win of the season in their first game of the season, Hillcrest girls basketball  took care of business on the road when they defeated the Moravia Mohawks, 58-39, on Nov. 22.

It was a dominant first quarter on both sides of the ball for the Ravens, scoring 21 and holding the Mohawks to just six points. At the half, Hillcrest held a 19 point lead.

Moravia had their best scoring quarter in the third, putting 14 on the board, and then they proceeded to score 12 in the final frame but the Raven’s lead stood firm with Hillcrest scoring double digits in all four quarters.

Picking up from where they left off last season, the Ravens were led on offense by Claire Withrow and Malia Yoder.

Leading all scorers, Withrow connected on a team high six three-pointers to lead the Ravens with 24 points. The junior, who was named first-team all conference last year also, had three steals, two assists, and two rebounds.

Yoder, a senior who was a second-team all conference selection last season, secured a double double, as she scored 17 against Moravia to go along with 10 rebounds, six steals, and one block.

As a team the Ravens had 24 steals total with Niva Helmuth grabbing eight and Delaney Shaw nabbing five. Shaw also had nine rebounds and Helmuth pulled down six of her own.

Playing in their home opener, Hillcrest (1-0) matched up against Cedar Valley Christian (0-0) on November 26. Up next for the Ravens is a road conference matchup against Highland (1-0) on December 3.
